WhatsApp notification when a website changes: how to set it up
Get a WhatsApp message when a website changes: add your number as a destination, set a rule, and read the changed lines in the chat. From $30 a month.
The short answer
To get WhatsApp notifications when a website changes, add the page to Website Change Tracker, write a rule for the change you care about, and add your WhatsApp number as a WhatsApp destination on the site. Each matching change arrives as a WhatsApp message with the page, the lines that changed and a link to the full before-and-after. WhatsApp alerts start on the Starter plan with hourly checks; Pro checks every 5 minutes.
How to get WhatsApp notifications when a website changes
WhatsApp alerts use the same monitor as email and Slack website change alerts. You add the page, describe the change you are waiting for, and choose WhatsApp as one of the places the alert goes.
- Create an account and add the page you want to monitor.
- Write a rule for the change you are waiting for, such as 'tell me when a new listing is posted' or 'alert me when the price drops below 200'. Without a rule, every change sends a message.
- Open the site's Alerts tab, choose WhatsApp under Add a destination, enter your number with its country code, and select Add WhatsApp.
- Choose how often the page is checked: hourly on Starter, every 5 minutes on Pro.
Adding your number is your opt-in. WhatsApp requires a business to have your permission before it messages you, and to use message formats Meta has approved, which is why you add the number yourself and every alert follows the same layout. Alerts arrive from Website Change Tracker's WhatsApp business account as their own chat, which you can mute, archive or block like any other.
Destinations are set per site, so every page on a site messages the same numbers. To alert someone else, add their number as another destination; the rule on each page decides which changes send anything at all.
What the WhatsApp message shows
Each message names the page that changed, lists the first few lines that were removed and the lines that replaced them, and links to the change in your dashboard. On a price or a listings page, that is usually the whole story: the old price and the new one, or the new listing's title, readable from the notification.
The link opens the full change with every changed line and before and after screenshots. Because WhatsApp runs on your phone, your desktop and the web, the same alert is in front of you wherever you are reading messages.
WhatsApp or a text message?
Both reach your phone within one check of the change. WhatsApp says more than 3 billion people in over 180 countries use it, which makes it the default messenger in much of the world. The two differ in what the message can carry and where it works:
| Text message | ||
|---|---|---|
| Shows the changed lines | Yes, the first few | No: a one-line summary and a link |
| Needs mobile data or Wi-Fi | Yes | No |
| Needs an app | Yes, WhatsApp on the phone with that number | No, any phone can receive it |
| Best for | Readers outside the US, and changes you want to read in full | Any phone, and places with weak data coverage |
You do not have to choose. Add both destinations and switch one off when you do not need it; the text message setup takes the same steps.
When WhatsApp alerts are worth it
A WhatsApp alert interrupts like a text, so keep it for changes that matter today:
- Restocks and limited releases, where the product page is the one to monitor.
- New listings, events and announcements on the page that lists them; getting notified when a website is updated covers choosing it.
- Price drops on something you are ready to buy.
- Notices from a regulator or government office in your country, where the page itself is the first place a change appears; see regulatory change monitoring.
Give each of these pages a plain-English rule so the chat only hears about the change you named, and leave slower pages on a site that alerts by email. Some large retailers block automated checks, and a failed check does not send a message, so look at a new monitor once or twice before relying on it.
Other ways to get a WhatsApp alert when a website changes
Few monitoring tools send WhatsApp alerts, so the alternatives mostly mean building it yourself:
| Option | How it works | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Your own app on the WhatsApp Cloud API | Your script sends messages from your own WhatsApp business number through Meta's API. | You need the recipient's opt-in, an approved message template for anything sent outside a 24-hour customer service window, and Meta has charged per template message since 1 July 2025. |
| changedetection.io with Apprise | The open-source monitor sends notifications through Apprise, which supports Meta's WhatsApp Cloud API. | You host the monitor and set up your own Meta app, business number and approved template. |
| Visualping | Email, webhooks, Telegram, Slack and Teams on Business plans, and SMS for US and Canadian numbers. | No WhatsApp alerts. |
| Distill.io | Email, SMS, push through its mobile app, Slack, Teams, Discord and webhooks. | No WhatsApp alerts. |
| Website Change Tracker | Add your number as a WhatsApp destination. | Starts on Starter; the Basic plan alerts by email only. |
